CHCA works in nursing stations in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and Nunavut, and supports hospitals in Yukon Territory. The majority of communities our nurses work in are remote.

The majority of our contracts are 2-3 weeks. If you are able to work longer than this duration there will be a larger choice of contracts as we are receiving more that are 4-6 weeks in length. Most contracts are scheduled about a month prior to departure.

What are the prerequisites to work in Northern Canada? To work in Northern Canada, you need at least 2 years of experience in the field of emergency or intensive care. Also, you must have a valid driver’s license. And finally, you must have the ability or willingness to work in an expanded autonomous role.

If you are self-motivated, adaptable, adventurous, willing to take on new challenges, and have a professional and cultural curiosity, then this is the experience for you.

We no longer hire international nurses, but we do hire subcontractors – they have to meet the same requirements as the nurses.

Community Health Nurses work in an expanded role and will be trained to plan and implement culturally appropriate health programs.

Travel and accommodations are arranged by the agency for the nurse prior to leaving on contract. Accommodations are typically onsite in a nursing residence or a very short walk from the nursing station.

We provide a full and comprehensive orientation that covers Indigenous Cultural Safety, Indigenous History, as well as Clinical Practice theory and skills for working in the north. Our orientation comprises approximately 60 hours of theory and practical experience over 2 weeks, and includes online delivery and an in person skills workshop at our office in Cambridge, ON.
